Was at a retreat last week, and God spoke to me when we were praying for our marketplaces. He brought me back to a sermon Ps Melvyn had preached a few months back, about Light of the World. It reminded me of the Light Source, and Sharon's Word of us being the Light of NUS. As such, i began to see the sermon in a whole new light...
What happens when we step into the Light?
1. Reveals our condition -from bondage to freedom
2. Reverses our direction -from death to life
3. Reflects our position -from slave to son
I'd always thought of the 'Light' being Jesus, but what if the 'Light' now were us? That means that when our classmates and lecturers see us, WE reveal their condition. Pastor Debra was telling us about how we should repent of our 'bo chap' spirit, and rightly so! For so long i have unknowingly been sucked into the spirit of nonchalance. I know about the promiscuity that goes on in the NUS hostels, and other chains of darkness that bind the people around me, but gradually...I've started to accept it. Stopped believing i can make a difference, stopped caring. Like many others, NUS becomes just a place i come to get my degree, a stepping stone to tread on to reach higher pastures.
This is not to say we should thus grab these stray lambs and rebuke them, but that we should start praying relentlessly. We should start caring, and believe that we can make a difference, even in the short few years we tread upon these grounds of Nusland. And we should make a stand for our God fearlessly, and spread the values of the Kingdom of God, when the opportunity presents itself.
It is then that stray sheep can make a U-turn back into the safety of the fold, turn from death to life. And THEN, they can receive salvation, and transform from slave to son. It is a paradigm shift for me, this Kingdom of Heaven thing Pastor has been preaching. But i'm beginning to see the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle come together bit by bit, beginning to see the big picture. That it is not just about evangelism, and salvation that does not last. How many hands raised up during altar call have so fleetingly grazed the carpet of the altar, only to slide back into their lives of darkness in the blink of an eye?
We need to bring the Kingdom of God here to NUS, and it starts by praying, by bringing Kingdom values here, before we even talk about Christ to them.
"How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused." -Hosea 11:8
Indeed, this is the Lord's heart for NUS. Even as He has not given up, and His heart aches with compassion for them, let's fight on, to love as He loved, and give as He gave.
